National Year Of Reading - Go All In

2026 is the National Year Of Reading. The theme is ‘Go All In’, which is all about reading about things that interest us. If you can read about it, you can also sing about it! Here, we’ve put together a list of topics that you might have your class reading about throughout the school year. Why not pair them up with a song to solidify learning?

1. The Great Fire Of London

In 1666 from Class Assembly - The Great Fire Of London

The whole story of The Great Fire Of London packed into one fabulously catchy song. Fun to sing and full of facts!

2. Minibeasts

Please Don't Squish Me! from My World: Minibeasts

If you’ve got a KS1 class that is currently looking at wildlife and all things bugs ’n’ bees, it’s worth checking out this song from My World: Minibeasts. A wonderfully catchy song with a thought-provoking chorus about how to treat minibeasts – no squishing, squashing, poking or prodding allowed!

3. The Tudors

Song Of The Wives from Class Assembly - The Tudors: Henry VIII

Never forget the order of Henry VIII's six wives again with this fabulously memorable and upbeat song.

4. The Food Chain

Food Chain from The Niki Davies Book Of Splendid Science Songs

This catchy, Latin-style song describes food chains and how different animals obtain their food from plants and other animals.

5. Space

Planets from KS2 Curriculum Crunchers: Science

You’ll never forget the order of the planets (by distance from the sun) ever again! This catchy song is packed with useful facts that everyone will enjoy.

6. Volcanoes

Volcano from Pictures, Poems & Percussion 2

Incredibly atmospheric and slightly eerie, this short poem (with optional backing) explores a volcano with rich, exciting language, perfect for practising oracy skills and providing inspiration for musical or artistic interpretations.

7. Digestion

Disgusting Digestion! from KS2 Curriculum Crunchers: Science

A fantastically fun song that will leave you in no doubt as to what’s going on inside your body! ‘Fresh fruit’, ‘fibre’ and ‘faeces’ all feature in this song, together with an important reminder that ‘what goes in must come out in the end’!

We know that the EYFS is one of the most important stages to help children fall in love with reading. We have a great selection of songs for this age group, to explore their interests and help tell traditional, well-loved stories:

8. The Three Little Pigs

Three Little Pigs from Song & Story - The Three Little Pigs

At the beginning of our mini-musical The Three Little Pigs, three little hogs have been sent by their mother to walk down ‘the long, long road’ and each build themselves a home. A light and hopeful song, brimming with wonder and possibility as the pigs look to the future with a ‘Cheerio’ and an ‘off we go!’.

9. The Princess And The Pea

A Real Princess from Song & Story - The Princess And The Pea

The prince has packed his bag and is off on a journey to find a real princess in our mini-musical The Princess And The Pea. A light, dreamy song to open the show with bright eyes and soft singing voices.

10. Dinosaurs

I Never Saw A Dinosaur from My World: Animals

A fun song all about dinosaurs, introducing the children to some dinosaur names and the subject of extinction.

If you are interested in supporting your EYFS classes and learning more about how songs and rhymes can foster a love of language and reading, we have a new workshop that covers this! Rhythm, Rhyme, Repeat! will show you how songs and singing are powerful tools to support language and vocabulary development. Have a look in more detail on our workshops page – we’d love to see you at a future workshop!
